  • At the 1984 Pre-Olympic Track and Field Camp in Atlanta, which was funded by Mayor Andrew Young’s office and the United States Information Agency, 150 athletes and coaches from 10 nations came to Atlanta to prepare for the Games. The camp was important because Russia planned to boycott the games and friendships and high profile events were necessary to keep nations encouraged to participate. IATC Director Mike Spino directed the camp in which Somalian Abdi Bile ran the first under 4 minute mile ever recorded on Atlanta soil when he and fellow Somalian, Jama Aden performed that feat. Spino was named the honorary coach of Somalia for the 1984 Games during the camp.
